That’s why we came up with the idea for the Great Frick Park Camp Out, a fundraiser for Nine Mile Run, last year. But we soon learned that right now, a city ordinance forbids all tent camping in the parks. No matter now well organized and supervised, and no matter who it benefits. The Mayor said he’d love to participate in the Camp Out, and that his office would try to help get the ordinance amended. But so far, no luck. It has been stuck in a committee of City Council for many months.
So this summer, we won’t be able to have an actual Camp Out, but we hope you will help us with our No Show Camp Out, in two ways. First, send us a little bit of the cash you would have spent to take part in the actual Camp Out. It will all go to support our ongoing stewardship and advocacy work. Then, if you’d like to be able to camp in the park for real next year, please contact your City Council representative, or the Mayor’s office, and ask them to amend the ordinance. We’ve provided info about how to reach them, and what you might want to say when you do. If we can change this, it won’t just benefit Nine Mile Run. Other groups, like Scout troops, would have new, affordable options for how to get kids in closer touch with the great outdoors.
Urban Camping. It’s a thing. From Singapore, to Chicago, to Berlin, people are exploring this new way to connect to nature without leaving the city. Let’s bring it to Pittsburgh! Thanks for your help…
